Originally manifested in 2017 by Rabbi Micah Shapiro, Yetzirah 2.0 - Havurat Yeztirah, is a community of musicians and songwriters studying, learning, writing, and playing in intentional community together, searching to uncover and rediscover meaning in Judaism. Utilizing traditional Jewish texts and Jewish studying concepts alongside the traditional meaning-making and storytelling process of songwriting. Havurat Yetzirah aims to steward and cultivate creative, authentic, and intimate relationships with Judaism.

The Havurah is comprised of a cohorts of musicians, taking part in an hour and a half, weekly virtual Beit Midrash (6 times) and spending personal time in between focused on composing Jewish music inspired by Jewish texts found in liturgical settings. Each member would compose six new original pieces of Jewish music, hiddushim, alone or in havrutah.

However your relationship with Judaism or songwriting manifests, you are welcome here. Havurat Yetzirah is open to all applicants.

Currently, two cohorts make up our 31 person community, that is set to grow February of 2021 and Spring 2021.

Havurah Yetzirah is made possible by the Hebrew College’s Open Circle, Hebrew College Innovation Lab, Newton, MA and stands on the shoulders of all the original Yetzirah Project members and its founder R. Micah Shapiro who helped build this vision of intentional, creative community.
